Chapter 2: Choosing domain names

There are many types of domains to invest in, but only a few types are a safe and solid investment.
In this chapter i will take you through choosing your domains and what you should expect to pay for them.

What not to buy

Please please please do not buy typo domains or names that are extremely similar to registered names.
You may think these company's will pay you generously for them or that you will receive lots of direct traffic but all you'll get is a big fat lawsuit!
Seriously there is a lot of law involved in domain name trading of which unless you are a specialist lawyer you need to steer clear of, as they will get you no where anyway.

What to buy

When finding generic domains i tend to stray more towards .coms, .nets as a secondary which are still very good. .orgs unless they are very special i am not such a fan of them. -s

Generic domains

Which to buy? I use a the google keyword tool for this - https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal.

So i typed in a few keywords from the list provided. As an example i chose the keyword 'dog', typed it in to the keyword tool and changed the list preference to global monthly search. This way you can see the most searched keyword and it turns out 'dog' was searched 68 million times a month. Now obviously i can't get dog.com/net or org, so move down the list to something less popular. I came across 'dog kennel' with 450,000 monthly searches. It's rare to find a word with so many searches and the domains free.

Short. Brandable. Pornouncable

In this market you will encounter something similar to CVCVC.com or LLLLL.com.
C = Consonant
V = Vowel
L = Letter
N = number

Example is oobly.com VVCCV.com (y = vowel), this is a prime example of a pronouncable, brandable (like google or ebay) and would be a good buy.

3 Letter domains are golden nuggets and can be flogged for a lot of money
You will NOT find any 3/4 letter .coms unregistered as there are very few combinations.
